SMP Racing junior driver Alexander Smolyar finished third in Saturday's race of the sixth round of Formula Renault Eurocup, which takes place in Germany at the Nurburgring circuit on August 30 - September 1.
In the qualifying round on Friday, Alexander was classified seventh and started Race 1 from the fourth row. By the middle of the race, Smolyar managed to get close to the drivers ahead of him and overtake three of them one by one. On the last laps of the race, the SMP Racing driver made another successful attack and moved up to third place, which he kept until the finish line.“We got a series of three successful races in a row, in which we managed to win a lot of positions, two in Belgium at the previous round and now in Germany,” SMP Racing driver Alexander Smolyar said. “Today we had speed, so it was easy to overtake. At the end of the race, the tyre was wearing out, because I fought for the whole race. Therefore, I didn’t manage to overtake another rival and move to second place. I’m still happy about third place, because, honestly, I did not expect to stand on the podium today, given that I started from seventh position. Tomorrow, I'm sure the qualifying round will be better, we have speed. There are a few things that need to be fixed, and I think we can fight for a victory.”
Race 2 of the sixth round of Formula Renault Eurocup will take place on Sunday, September 1.
