MP Racing junior driver Alexander Smolyar stood on the second step of the podium in the Saturday race of the seventh Formula Renault Eurocup round, which takes place on September 7-8 at the Hungaroring circuit in Hungary. In the morning qualifying round, Alexander was second fastest with only 0.197 seconds gap to the leader, and took second place on the starting grid of Saturday's race. The start of the race was behind the safety car due to heavy rain. After three laps, the organizers decided to stop the race for safety reasons. Smolyar was classified second according to the results after three full laps.
Since drivers did not complete the full distance of the race, they were awarded only half the usual points. Alexander now has 162 points and currently holds third place in the overall standings among twenty-nine drivers of the championship.
“The first race was stopped after three laps that we spent behind the safety car, so I kept second position,” SMP Racing junior driver Alexander Smolyar said. “Of course, it’s a little sad that I didn’t have a chance to fight for full points. As a result, I got 9 points for this race. I am happy to finish second, but I hope tomorrow the weather conditions will be better on the track and we will be able to fight for first place."
Race 2 of the seventh Formula Renault Eurocup round will take place on Sunday, September 8th.
