SMP Racing junior driver Alexander Smolyar finished on the podium in second in the Sunday race of the seventh Formula Renault Eurocup round, which took place on September 7-8 at the Hungaroring circuit in Hungary.
As on Saturday, Alexander was second fastest in the qualifying round and started the race from the first row. Throughout the race, Smolyar kept second position, not letting his rivals get close enough for the attack even at the restart after the safety car period ended. The SMP Racing junior driver scored 27 points during this weekend and got close to his rival in second place in the overall standings. Smolyar has 180 points, which is only 4.5 less than Victor Martins (MP Motorsport) has.
“Two podiums means this was a good weekend,” SMP Racing junior driver Alexander Smolyar said. “In general, I am satisfied: we recovered a little in the championship. It's a bit disappointing that they awarded only half points for the first race, but the weather did not allow us to fight, and the race was stopped before the finish line. Since it’s difficult to chase on this track because of the “dirty” air from the car in front, in the second race I tried to pass Oscar Piastri immediately after the start. But it didn’t work out and the whole race I tried to stay as close to him as possible, although it is difficult to do it here. In general, we are pleased with the weekend."
The eighth round of Formula Renault Eurocup will take place on September 27-29 in Barcelona (Spain).
