SMP Racing Junior program driver Alexander Smolyar set a track record in France for the Formula Renault Eurocup during the pre-season tests that took place on March 15-16 at Le Castellet.

Smolyar took part in the collective tests of the Formula Renault Eurocup driving Formula Renault FR-19, the new car of the series with the power of 270 hp. On Friday, Alexander showed the best time among 21 participants in the pre-season tests with the lap of 1:59.786s. He became the only driver who was able to overcome the two-minute mark. On Saturday, the Russian improved his own result and drove the lap in 1: 59.415.

“The tests were very successful, it was the second time when I drove a new car, which is different from the previous generation of Formula Renault Eurocup,” Alexander Smolyar shared. “At the end of the first day, my impressions of the car were different from the assumptions that I had before I got into it. The new car is heavier, it has more aerodynamics, it is faster, but perhaps not on all the tracks - this we will learn during the season. It has a very big potential, because even with such weight and on the new Hankook tires it shows more impressive results compared to the previous generation car. I drove my best lap on Saturday morning, not even using a new set of tires. I’m excited about the start of the season, let's see how the car behaves on the battlefield.”

In the upcoming season, Alexander Smolyar will drive the car of the French team R-Ace GP. The first round of the Formula Renault Eurocup will be held April 12-14 in the Italian Monza.
