SMP Racing junior driver Alexander Smolyar won Sunday’s race of the ninth Formula Renault Eurocup round, which took place on October 4-6 at the German Hockenheimring circuit.In the qualifying round on Saturday morning, Alexander was second fastest and started the race from the first row. In difficult rain conditions, Smolyar was able to make a move and become the leader, which he kept until the finish line.
This victory in Hockenheim is the third for the Russian driver this season. According to the results of nine rounds of the series, Alexander holds third place in the overall standings, reducing the gap from the drivers in first and second places. Smolyar has 233 points, Victor Martins - 269.5 points, Oscar Piastri - 283 points. The difference between the drivers before the last round of the championship is 36.5 and 50 points, respectively. The SMP Racing junior driver still has a chance to compete with his rivals in the final races for a top championship position.
"Victory in the second race at the Hockenheimring, I am very pleased with the result. Today there were difficult conditions, it rained all day, both during the qualifying round and during the race," SMP Racing driver Alexander Smolyar said. "I was second fastest in today’s qualifying, just needed a little bit more to take pole position. In the rainy race I started from second position, I had a chance and was confident in my abilities that I could overtake and win this race, and I succeeded. Three laps after the start, I made a move, successfully overtook my rival ahead and at the finish I was already the leader with quite a big gap behind. I am very pleased with the result, we have earned important points for both team’s and overall standings. There is the final round in Abu Dhabi in a month, we will fight for victory in the last two races of the season."
The final round of the Formula Renault Eurocup season will take place on October 24-26 in Abu Dhabi.
